MENTOR HOT CASE BREAST IMPLANT DISCUSSION AT BTS

Beauty Through Science Congress is an extensive annual meeting in Stockholm, with a program covering different surgical procedures. The conference includes talks about the sponsor’s science and products among the several sessions in the BTS program.

In this year’s event, Dr. Bill Adams moderated the Mentor Session with a Hot Case Discussion, adopting the long-term view and discussing Mentor’s long-term breast implant safety study, the GLOW study, with Dr. Marc Pacifico, Dr. Sara Dominguez Bengoa and Prof. Yoav Barnea.

This study features valuable data for all. GLOW stems from Mentor’s belief in the inner strength and courage that radiates in women, and they aim to support all women in achieving and maintaining this glow.

MENTOR’S GLOW

The study is a 10-year post-approval prospective clinical study on Mentor’s MemoryShape, MemoryGel, and MemoryGel XTRA breast implants, involving about 3,600 patients.

WHAT KIND OF BREAST IMPLANTS DO WE HAVE? A RETROSPECTIVE.

Historically, there have been six generations of implants. The early generations, particularly Gen 2 implants from the 80s, had significant issues like underfilling and non-form stability. The Gen 3 and 4 implants improved, and the Gen 6 implants increased the fill volume-to-manageable volume ratio and gel cohesivity.

We see a marked difference in the appearance of patients with different breast tissue conditions. For example, a young patient with tight skin and glandular breast tissue will have a more controlled distribution of fill compared to a patient with loose skin and breast atrophy after childbirth. When both patients wear a bra, they appear similar because the bra controls the fill distribution.

The idea behind Gen 6 implants is to allow surgeons to control the fill distribution within the breasts better, enhancing stability and predictability and resulting in better shaping with fewer soft tissue changes over time. Preliminary data suggests these implants may reduce long-term shell failures due to lower stress levels.

ADVANTAGES OF GEN 6 BREAST IMPLANTS

The GLOW study shows promising three-year data for MemoryShape, MemoryGel, and MemoryGel XTRA implants. The majority of implants were submuscular or dual-plane, and most were smooth. The reoperation rates were relatively low, with implant-related complications such as capsular contracture, rupture, infection, and wrinkling being minimal.

Patient-reported outcomes have shown a consistent increase in well-being over three to five years, indicating that the benefits of these implants are maintained long-term. This ongoing study will continue to collect data over seven more years, highlighting Mentor’s innovation and commitment to patient safety and performance.
